Slovak

The Slovak language, although it belongs to the same West Slavic language group as Polish, is not as easy to understand for Poles as it might seem. It shows the greatest similarities with Czech, and because of the close relationships between the Czechs and Slovaks – spending more than 70 years living together in one country – many of them, especially the slightly older ones, speak both languages effortlessly. Czech has always enjoyed greater prestige and is more widely known. Owing to this, companies that launch computer games or movies on foreign markets often make them only available in the Czech version, without translating them into Slovak. Is that the right thing to do?

Slovak translation in business

Businesspeople who make an effort to learn about and reach their customers know well that a company which communicates with clients in their native language wins their favour. On the one hand, this law often imposes the requirement to submit relevant documentation (certificates, instructions, technical specifications, or product specifications) in the language of the country. On the other hand, everyone knows that content which is understandable and attractive to a potential customer is much more likely to convince them to make a purchase than some text in a foreign language, which, even if it is comprehensible, does not build trust. That is why we always relegate marketing content to native speakers of a given language, who not only seek to faithfully recreate the meaning of the advertising materials, but also add levity and flair to make the text pleasing to the target audience.

The largest areas of trade between Poland and Slovakia are in mechanical and electrical machines and their components, vehicles, metallurgical products, chemical products, light- and wood-paper products, and agricultural products. The role of tourism cannot be underestimated: translations into Slovak are perfect especially for resorts located near the southern border of Poland, focused on tourists who come for winter holidays. It is worth noting that due to Slovakia’s membership in the Euro zone, Polish companies often attract Slovak clients not only with quality, but also with an attractive price.
