Ukrainian not only shares with Polish the territorial proximity of its speakers: the close ties between the two countries have led to many lexical similarities between the two languages. Interestingly, in some cases Polish was an intermediary; it was thanks to Polish that Ukrainian, German, or Czech borrowings appeared in Ukrainian centuries ago.
